This five CD box set features all of Elvis Presley's 1950s master recordings. Besides the master recordings, there are a few other things here. There are excerpts from a press conference given by Elvis when he went into the army. There are also demo tapes, alternate takes and some live recordings. Just about everything Elvis recorded in the 1950s was great, so you can't go wrong with this.

I got this while doing a major study on the life of Elvis Presley last year. I never read so many books on one person before. I found him to be a very fascinating subject.I even went out and bought a video player just to see his movies and documentaries on his life (we have no tv), and then I wanted a collection of his 50's music, because to me, that was the real Elvis. This is what you gotta have, if you want it all from the very beginning, all of what he did in the 50's. I listened to it from strictly an ''educational'' viewpoint, and am amazed and impressed with the vocal talent he had. To be honest, I feel the subject matter of many of the songs to be a bit silly, but then I find most modern music to be lacking in values and good taste. The songs I do appreciate on here are the spirituals. And I like his songs from the film Love Me Tender, esp. ''We're Gonna Move''. I think Elvis could have done great as a folksinger too. The songs from the films "Jailhouse Rock" and "King Creole" are good too.If you like Elvis and are unsure of what exactly to get from the 100's of CD choices that are out there, just simplify the whole matter and get this set. You won't be disappointed. This IS Elvis.

The songs are great, but they're not listed on the CD itself-only on the case. It's frustrating to put the disks in a multi-disk changer and not know what songs are on the disk.

If you like the Elvis of the 1950s, then you'll love this box set. It contains all of the 50's Master recordings. That is this set's strong point. However, I grew up listening to music in stereo, so the fact that these gems were recorded in Mono is the weak point for me. I can listen to Mono for a while but I get bored with it pretty soon. So I've listened to this set a few songs at a time. I like the set, but I love the Elvis 50s songs that have been released in stereo (on Essential Elvis Vol. 2, for example).
